Tingle

January 17, 2021

“Then the Lord said to Samuel, ‘See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle.'” 1 Samuel 3:11

I took advantage of halftime yesterday to get some chores done in the garage. I misjudged the length of halftime, however, and was still working when the game resumed. So it was that, as I was walking back into the house, I heard something that made my ears tingle: “Touchdown!” As the word was yelled with joy, I knew that it was six points for the good guys. Erika’s shout let me know that the Packers had extended their lead to 25-10.

Listening to the first reading this morning in worship, I thought about all the things that make our ears tingle. Samuel might well have imagined that being spoken to directly by the Lord would be enough. After all, the word of the Lord was rare in those days. But God is just getting started. God’s about to do something that will set all the ears of the Israelites a-tingle. Jesus picks up on this theme in his conversation with Nathanael. Greater things are yet to come!

In this season after Epiphany, we marvel at all that God has done, all that God has shown us. The fullness of God’s grace has been revealed in Christ Jesus. And still, God is just getting started. Come and see, come and listen, as the Lord does even greater things. Then, join in the work. The world needs our witness.

Be well, friends. You are loved.

Speaking God, your servants are listening. Unstop our ears and pour out your Word. Raise us to newness of life in Christ, that we might speak your word of life and love for all people today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
