Joy

September 2, 2020

“I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.” John 15:11

Fourteen years ago today, I watched Erika walk down the aisle toward me. In front of about 300 people, we made vows of lifelong love and faithfulness to one another. We were prayed over and blessed. We raised our voices with the congregation in song (“Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” and “O God Beyond All Praising” for those keeping score at home). The Word was proclaimed over us and we were sent into the world, husband and wife.

What a life together it’s been so far! We didn’t really know what we were getting into; I don’t think anyone does on their wedding day. We’ve welcomed three amazing children into this world. We’ve moved twice for new calls. We have sought to live lives worthy of the calling of Christ.  I have been blessed with a parter who models God’s love and forgiveness. Like grace itself, I do not deserve her. But I am grateful.

We sang that day, “And whether our tomorrows be fill’d with good or ill, We’ll triumph through our sorrows and rise to bless you still.” Amen and amen and amen. I love you, Erika. Happy anniversary.

May you all be blessed by God’s love today.

Be well, friends. You are loved.

God of grace, we thank you for the love you show to us through Christ Jesus. Enfold our loving relationships with your grace, that we might more and more reflect your grace in this world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
