Beloved

September 1, 2020

“And just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.'” Mark 1:10-11

The transition back to school for the kids has (surprise!) complicated our mornings. I find it more and more difficult to write first thing in the morning. But sometimes the delay opens up opportunities. This morning, one of our children was sharing that they are feeling a bit overwhelmed by everything. In the car I said, “Remember, you are smart, talented, and beloved.” They said, “What’s beloved?” I explained that it means to be loved by someone. In this case, by one’s parents and by God. And then I referenced the story of Jesus’ baptism, how he was declared to be God’s beloved, and how in baptism we are included in that promise.

When we got to school, I quickly pulled up theĀ Daily Texts on my phone and said, “Let’s see what the Word says to us today.” And there was Jesus’ baptism and the promise that he is beloved, and that we are, too. Friends, perhaps you’re feeling overwhelmed today, too. Like the world is too much and you’re not enough. Well, there’s a Word for you today: For Jesus’ sake, you are beloved by God.

Be well, friends. You are loved.

Loving God, thank you for lifting me out of this world’s chaotic, swirling waters. Remind me that Jesus’ grace is enough for me in all circumstances. Help me live today with boldness and courage. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

How on target this was today for me. You are appreciated and loved, also.
