Don’t Worry

June 30, 2020

“Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6

For most of my life, June 30 was simply the last day of June. As the senior pastor of Grace, however, this date has become emblazoned on my mind as the last day of the fiscal year. Will we make it? Will we end the year with a deficit or a little bit of a surplus? There is a strong history of year-end giving at Grace, for which I give thanks to God. Many years we make it. Some years we don’t. As the sun rises this morning, we need to take in about $63,000 to avoid a deficit. Not too bad considering the size of the budget and, you know, the global pandemic. Wherever the year ends, God’s people have stepped forward in faith to keep mission and ministry moving forward into a new year.

As today begins, I’m going to eschew handwringing. I’m not going to worry. Wherever we end up, we end up. More to the point, whatever our financial statements say, we are richly blessed at Grace. In the grace of Jesus Christ, crucified and raised, we have all that we need.

Don’t get me wrong. The church and school need resources to do the ministry set before us. I am thankful for those who encourage giving, those who record gifts, and, of course, those who give! Our financial health is important. But it’s not the most important thing. God continues to journey with us, and all manner of things will be well.

Two quick thoughts:

  1. Whenever I read this verse, I confess that I hear Bob Marley, not Bobby McFerrin. Does this matter? Of course not. Just thought I’d share.
  2. Have you considered making a year-end gift to Grace? It’s not too late. #NoHarmInAsking

Thanks to everyone for supporting God’s work at and through Grace Lutheran Church and School. And thanks be to God, who hears our prayers and supplications, who gives us the riches of the Kingdom.

Be well, friends. You are loved.

God of abundance, you have richly blessed your people with the gift of life, abundant and eternal. Lead us to live lives of gratitude, blessing others as you first blessed us. Empower and inspire Grace for another year of ministry; may we faithfully follow. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
