Fruit of the Light

April 16, 2021

“The fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true. Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” Ephesians 5:9-11

I went to sleep last night with Adam Toledo on my mind, this thirteen-year-old boy killed in the dark of night.

I woke this morning to news alerts of a mass shooting in Indianapolis, eight people killed under cover of darkness.

How long, O Lord?

Paul’s admonition to the Christians at Ephesus rings true today. We must ask ourselves: What is pleasing to the Lord? Is violence? Death? Surely not. When this world put the Lord to death, the sun went dark. But the Son did not stay dead. Christ is risen! Alleluia!

We cry Alleluia in praise, but also in protest of this world’s addiction to violence done under the cover of darkness.

May we take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness. May we who live by grace seek to do what is pleasing to the Lord.

Be well, friends. You are loved.

God of life, through the resurrection of your Son you have drawn us in the new light of Easter. May our lives reflect your light into this world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
