A Tree to Flourish

December 6, 2020

“All the trees of the field shall know that I am the Lord. I bring low the high tree, I make high the low tree; I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish. I the Lord have spoken; I will accomplish it.” Ezekiel 17:24

Well, it’s a first at the Dispatch – an evening edition! Vacation! My morning started late. I slept past seven and then had a breakfast of scrambled eggs, pepper bacon, and a leftover cherry bratwurst. Needless to say, this day was moving in the right direction.

After some lazing about, we went to a Christmas tree farm about 90 minutes from home. It was time to embrace the frosty majesty of the winter landscape and select that most important of Christmas symbols (no, Audrey, not one of those stupid ties with Santa Clauses on it; I have one of those at home). I have many fond memories of doing exactly this from my childhood, but we’ve never taken the kids to chop down our own tree. What fun! And now, in our living room, the evergreen stands proud and true, pointing heavenward and reminding us of the greatest gift, Christ Jesus our Lord. We’ll trim it tomorrow; doubtless there will be pictures to share.

Time to go to worship! I didn’t catch the livestream earlier, so I think I’ll pour myself a glass of wine and check it out. What pairs well with Star Wars pajama pants?

Be well, friends. You are loved.

Nourishing God, you send water and give growth. May we, watered in baptism and fed by your Word, continue to grow in our faith. Let our lives by signs pointing to your Son. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
