Birthday (Observed)

November 21, 2020

“So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.” 1 John 4:16

Nine years ago tomorrow, we became a family of four. Having gone a week or so past the due date, Erika’s doctor induced labor on the Tuesday morning before Thanksgiving (the doctor wanted to clear the deck before Thanksgiving itself, it seems). Having not found out ahead of time, we were guessing that it was a girl. Instead, we got Anders!

We brought our little boy home on Thanksgiving, and we’ve been grateful for him ever since. We named him for St. Andrew, the brother of Peter who introduced Peter to Jesus. His name combines my Scottish heritage (Andrew being the patron saint of Scotland; I called St. Andrews home for a year) and our shared Norwegian heritage. There was no doubt it would be Anders, not Andrew.

And tomorrow, he turns nine. We’re celebrating today because tomorrow is filled with Grace obligations. He’s quite the guy, with the perfect disposition to put up with being a middle child. He’s a Star Wars aficionado, a student and practitioner of America’s pastime (and a ardent fan of Kris Bryant and the Cubs), a voracious reader, and a LEGO master. More importantly, he’s kind, bright, and relentlessly optimistic.

So, back to celebrating! All three of our children have now had a pandemic birthday. Here’s to a better 2021!

Be well, friends. You are loved.

God of life, we thank you for the children in our life. As Andrew brought Peter to Jesus, help us to share our faith with the little ones around us. Bless Anders throughout the coming year. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
