Weal and Woe
“I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe; I the Lord do all these things.” Isaiah 45:6-7
Well, it’s Day 236 of the election. Wait, no, it’s Day 236 at the Dispatch. It only feels like the election has been going on that long. I wonder if John King has slept since Tuesday? Anyway, perhaps today we’ll get electoral clarity, even if it seems like we’ll have wait for some recounts and endure some shenanigans. But there you go. I’m going to choose to trust that our democratic institutions can endure such chicanery.
Today’s Old Testament passage from the Daily Texts proclaims an important truth. God is the Lord, and there is no other. Full stop.
Today, Christ is still risen. The Spirit is still on the loose. The church is still called into the world to work for justice and righteousness. I pray that the days to come are peaceful and bring clarity. The outcome of this election is so incredibly important, for so many reasons. But it’s not the most important thing, and that’s worth remembering. For today, that’s enough to calm my soul.
Also, why don’t we say “weal and woe” more often? What a fantastic phrase.
Be well, friends. You are loved.
Lord of the nations, bring peace to our world, clarity to our country, and leadership that works for the well being of all people with humility and compassion. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
