Hearts that Hear

October 5, 2020

“Mortal, all of my words that I shall speak to you receive in your heart and hear with your ears.” Ezekiel 3:10

The Old Testament passage from the Daily Texts for today, Day 204, is a reminder of how we hear. First with our hearts, then with our ears. How often have you failed to truly listen to someone because your heart was not open to them? How many times have conversations broken down because one or both parties had their minds made up before the speaking even started? We can’t hear with our ears unless our hearts are open to one another.

This is truer as we seek to listen to God. God reminds Ezekiel that the prophet’s mortal ears are not going to pick up the Lord’s Word on their own. Ezekiel needs a heart that is tuned to the divine wavelength.

Hearing God’s voice amid this world’s cacophony is often challenging. Thank God the Spirit has taken up residence in our hearts, opening us up to God and to the world around us over and over again. If we start with the heart, we will have ears to hear. May we hear God’s voice today, bringing comfort and call. May we listen in love to one another today, lest we not hear one another at all.

Be well, friends. You are loved.

Speaking God, you are not content to leave us alone. You desire fellowship with your creatures, speaking and listening to us in love. Open our hearts today, Lord, and focus our ears. May your Word reach our hearts with clarity. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
