Their Ways

October 2, 2020

“I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I will lead them and repay them with comfort.” Isaiah 57.18

I have seen their ways. Haven’t we all? Those people, those sinners, who are the real problem? If only they would get their act together, we’d be fine.

For the briefest moment, that’s how I read this passage. Maybe because I haven’t had any coffee yet. Then it dawned on me: am part of the they. I am one whose ways are broken. I am one in need of healing. I mean, so are they, but I dare not think I’m not in need, too.

You don’t need me to recount the news of the day to know that our world is broken and in need of healing. Thanks be to God, that’s what God provides. God doesn’t repay us by giving us what we deserve, but with healing and comfort. Jesus, the Great Physician, comes to heal the sick. Healed, we are called to follow him along the Way.

We’ll see a glimpse of this later this morning during our school’s annual Walk with Grace walkathon. The students have been raising money and collecting food items to support families adversely affected by the pandemic and to partner with Beyond Hunger, our local food pantry. I hope we can follow the lead of these children and walk faithfully with our God in service of others.

Be well, friends. You are loved.

Healing God, we repent for all the ways we have gone wrong. Thank you for your Son, Jesus Christ, who graciously gives hope, wholeness, and healing. May we follow him today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
