Distinctions

August 1, 2020

“There is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him.” Romans 10:12

There are a great many distinctions between people. Some are the result of God’s unending creativity which yields endless variations on the theme of imago Dei. Others are caused by our brokenness, the sin that creates false divisions and insists some humans matter more than others.

Paul wrote to the Romans that there is no distinction between Jew and Greek. Why? Because they were identical peoples? No. Rather, they are under the same lordship. Christ was crucified and raised for everyone; the Spirit is now unleashed, knocking down barriers and lifting up the oppressed. Everyone in the Kingdom of God stands upon equal ground at the foot of the cross.

In this moment of history, we are hearing the Spirit’s call once more. When we say Black Lives Matter, we are not (of course!) insisting that they matter more. Instead, we are living into the lordship of Christ, who proclaims that the sinful, racist divisions we have created and upheld have no place in his kingdom.

In Christ, let us celebrate our distinctiveness and claim the true unity that God has always intended.

Be well, friends. You are loved.

Generous God, creation is filled with your glory and we each bear your image. Thank you for Jesus, whose death and resurrection has restored us to you. Let us work to live as citizens of your kingdom, where all people know and share your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
