Hope Springs Eternal

April 1, 2021

“Let the field exult, and everything in it.” Psalm 96:12a

Today the church enters the Triduum, the Great Three Days whose mysteries stand at the center of our faith and salvation. I’m preaching this Maundy Thursday, and will post that sermon after worship is finished tonight.

Much less importantly, today is also Opening Day. This afternoon, in the crisp air and under a sunny sky, the Kansas City Royals will take the field against the Texas Rangers. The Royals looked great in spring training, having added some nice players in the offseason. Hope springs eternal! It will likely be hope disappointed. So it goes. I’m just glad we get a full season of baseball this year. It is a sign of spring and the slow return to a fuller, post-pandemic life. Not that we’re out of the woods, but there is hope.

And there is hope on this Maundy Thursday, even as the gospel narrative moves Jesus closer to his death. With death’s shadow looming, betrayal unfolding, denial waiting in the wings, Jesus shares hope. He washes feet. Breaks bread. Blesses wine. Commands us: Love one another!

Whether you’re a baseball fan or not, I pray that your life is shot through with hope today. I’ll be back later. Christ is with you now.

Be well, friends. You are loved.

God, hope springs eternal through your Son. Help us receive the gifts he gives. Send us forth to serve, kneeling at the feet of those in need. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
