The Great

March 12, 2021

“There is none like you, O Lord; you are great, and your name is great in might.” Jeremiah 10:6

I don’t really spend much time pondering how people will think of me when I’m gone. I’d like to imagine that I’ve done enough for folks to consider me Dave the Pretty Good. I don’t think I’ve done nearly enough to be called “the Great.”

Today the church commemorates Gregory the Great, Bishop of Rome, Latin Father, Doctor of the Church, and apparently an all-around great guy. Gregory I was born into a politically influential family and served as the prefect of Rome. He later tried his hand at monastic living before being elected to the papacy. Gregory died on this day in 604.

As pope, Gregory launched the first large-scale mission from Rome, sending preachers to convert the Anglo-Saxon invaders of England. He set up a school for church musicians; Gregorian chant is named in his honor. Gregory came to be known as the “Father of Christian Worship” for his contributions to the life of the church, including the establishment of a lectionary and the writing of prayers meant to correlate with scripture readings. Gregory made significant contributions to the Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, still used in the Byzantine Rite. He is the patron saints of musicians, singers, teachers, and students.

Sounds like a really great guy!

You and I will likely not be remembered as “the Great” but we worship a great and glorious God, who set the stars in their courses and then came to earth to die for us. Whether you are great or just pretty good today, this same God is with and for you. Even if you feel like a total failure, you are held by a great love. And that’s more than pretty good.

Be well, friends. You are loved.

Great God, we thank you for Gregory and all the saints who have gone before us. Today we pray for those who make music to your glory, and for all who learn and teach. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
