Thankfuls, 2020

November 25, 2020

Well, it’s the Eve of Thanksgiving. Which means I’m preaching tomorrow. Which means I’m procrastinating. Which means it’s time for the Seventh Annual Edition of my Thankfuls. Every night at bedtime, the five of us gather in the boys’ room. Between “Now I lay me down to sleep” and  the Lord’s Prayer, we take our turns saying those things for which we’re thankful.

It’s a good exercise, ending the day with Thankfuls, precisely because we don’t always feel like it. It’s good to bend your heart and mind to gratitude, even when you don’t want to. 2020 was made for this sort of reflection! It’s been a hard year. Honestly, it’s been a crappy day. Rainy and blah and no time tomorrow with friends or family. But still we will be grateful! Like the one leper from that sermon that will soon burst forth, we will be thankful. Like it or not!

May your Thanksgiving be blessed. Be well, friends. You are loved.

This year, this weird year, I’m thankful for:

  • Greta, who bakes and sews and, er, hockeys
  • Led Zeppelin II
  • The teachers of Grace, who never cease to amaze
  • Susanna Clarke
  • Instacart drivers
  • LEGO
  • Giving away furniture
  • Schmyle
  • Pastors Costello and Medlin, partners in ministry
  • Warm socks
  • Candler School of Theology; maybe someday I’ll get to see where I go to school
  • Bratwurst
  • Barack Obama; dude can write
  • Anders, bright and kind, baseball fan extraordinaire
  • The great horns of the north blowing wildly, for Rohan had come at last
  • Door County; at least we went somewhere this year
  • Nineteenth-century Russian literature
  • Glenfarclas
  • Piano lessons and those who teach them
  • Madam Vice President
  • Sandwiches
  • Christmas decorations, and their early emergence
  • The lay leaders of Grace, especially this year
  • Having a catch with the boys
  • Mando
  • The backyard
  • The Grace AV team
  • Lawn Boy, on its thirtieth anniversary
  • Local beer, made by friends
  • Torsten the Relentless, purveyor of joy
  • The basement
  • Terry Fretheim, who taught me as much as anyone; rest well
  • Lefse
  • Hoodies
  • Baseball and hockey coaches
  • The minor prophets
  • The thirst for racial reconciliation and justice
  • Our family getting along during quarantine
  • Neville Longbottom
  • Green bean casserole
  • Confirmation class
  • The ever-golden Alex Gordon
  • My DMin cohort, from whom I’ve learned so much already
  • Otters
  • Laughter
  • Cheese
  • 2021; it can only get better, right?
  • Tomorrow’s sermon, which will probably be awesome
  • Erika, always
  • Jesus Christ, the hope for a new future, the peace for today

Happy thanksgiving!

That’s a ling list and I’m sure could be longer. It’s amazing what we’re grateful for once we stop and really think about it. I’m grateful for you and your leadership! Have a great day tomorrow and beyond.
