“So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk are drunk at night.” 1 Thessalonians 5:6-7

Well, we’re off to a sluggish start at the Dispatch offices today. It was not a good night of sleep in the Lyle household! 80% of us slept poorly. It was one of those nights of parenting when kids start rotating beds, and so parents do, too. So I was a little annoyed when I read our upcoming epistle reading this morning! Those who sleep sleep at night? I wish! I am happy to report, however, that 100% of us were sober last night.

While it’s frustrating (and exhausting) to have not slept, Paul’s injunction to keep awake rings true. We know neither the day nor the hour of Christ’s reappearing. Neither do we yet know in what surprising ways Jesus will show up in our lives today. Keep awake, lest you miss out. And rest well, knowing that you are held safe in the promise of the gospel.

If you see me with my head on my desk today, please let me be. Also, happy 537th birthday to Martin Luther!

Be well, friends. You are loved.

God, thank you for keeping watch over us in the night. As we greet the new day, give us energy and wisdom. May your Spirit guard and guide us through this day, and grant us rest tonight. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
