Come Together

August 5, 2020

“Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other.” Psalm 85:10

Our psalm for this Sunday contains delightful images of the future God is unfolding. Nouns are personified. Love and faithfulness will meet like long-lost friends finding each other in Times Square. Righteousness and peace will kiss like a bride and groom at the end of a wedding ceremony. When it all comes together in God’s future, there will be great joy.

It’s hard to put it all together. Watching my sons learn the game of baseball, I’m mindful of how complex the game is and just how difficult it is to put it all together. To know where to be and to make the catch; to know how to swing and to hit the ball. What joy there is when it all actually works!

In my own life it’s a challenge to hold it all together. I’m beginning a degree program next week and I am very excited to get started. I will confess, however, that I’m moderately anxious about holding together all the pieces of my life, from parenting to pastoring (in a pandemic!). But what joy there will be in the process of learning and growing.

Our world is in need of coming together. Long-calcified boundaries continue to keep us apart. In all of this, our verse today is instructive. It is up to us to personify love and faithfulness, righteousness and peace. We do so in the name of the One who brought all of this together in his life and in his death, Jesus Christ our Lord. His love is steadfast, his faithfulness to his mission unwavering. His righteousness he gifts to us, his peace is ever-present.

Yes, things fall apart. But what joy when it all comes together!

Be well, friends. You are loved.

God of peace, hold us in your love and keep us strong in faith. Let us live into the righteousness given to us by Jesus. Give us courage to work to bring people together, and to do so under the sign of the cross. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
