“As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love.” John 15:9

Day 89. Uff da. Today’s verse is the New Testament passage from the Daily Texts, and it’s a good reminder of where we are.

We are in the love of God. Simple, but easy to forget, especially when we face so many challenges and uncertainties.

Today I remember that everything going on in my life is held within God’s love, a love so strong that the Father sent the Son who died that we would live. Today I hold:

  • Anxiety about how to lead a congregation through a pandemic that isn’t going away any time soon
  • A desire to become a better ally in matters of racial equity and justice, and concern that I won’t get it “right”
  • An understanding that my work-life balance is wonky at best
  • Hope for our associate pastor call process
  • Joy and thanksgiving for gathering around Word and Sacrament with members of Grace
  • Concern about how this is all affecting our children, and hope for the future when I see their resilience
  • Anticipation for a degree program beginning in August
  • Curiosity about when Major League Baseball is going to get its act together and figure out a plan to play ball (this is not a big deal, but it’s amazing to listen to the millionaires argue with billionaires about how to do this; geez, get off my lawn)

The list could go on and on, as thoughts and emotions swirl this way and that. It’s all going on inside of me.

And where am I? Abiding in God’s love, given in Christ. Jesus takes this all into his embrace, and allows me to set it down. This is God’s world, not mine. This is God’s church, not mine. Today, I’m thankful that I am in God’s love and God is working things out. All I need to do is trust and follow.

Whatever’s going on inside you today, remember where you are. Held in the embrace of God.

Be well, friends. You are loved.

God, your self-giving love embraces your people. Still our thoughts for a moment. Clear our heads. Clean our hearts. Let us rest in your embrace. Let us act in service of your gospel. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
