Slovakia 2019: Lonely No More

July 5, 2019

Day four of VBS has come and gone. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly these weeks go by. Daniel, by day’s end, had been tossed into the lions’ den. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens, won’t we? But that’s for Friday.

While I hope I never get thrown to the lions, I do resonate with how often things seem lost – unless you know where to look. This afternoon, many of us traveled to Istebné to see the wooden, articular church which had been pastored by Bohdan’s grandfather and great-grandfather. There, on the eve of the feast day of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Bohdan spoke of the perseverance of Protestants in Slovakia throughout the centuries. Even more, Bohdan spoke of God’s faithfulness; of how God can take what little we have to offer and bless it. The gospel brings freedom, even in the midst of captivity, injustice, and oppression.

You can read more about the articular church in this post from our trip in 2017.

Last night, I was blessed to sit in Bohdan’s back yard, sharing beer and conversation with Bohdan and Adrian. It wasn’t a business meeting, just friends enjoying a wonderful night. We spoke of the challenges we face in ministry, and the places we find encouragement and strength.

Encouragement and strength; these are gifts I need in these days. So much is not right in the. But God is faithful. God will continue to take and bless what little we have to offer. God is good. That much I’ve seen this week.

Our Bible point in VBS today was that, “when you’re lonely, God is with you.” I am thankful for my friends in Martin, and my friends from Grace, who remind me that God is present for me through them. I pray God may be present through me, for them, too. And I claim the promise that, because Christ was crucified and yet now lives, the lions won’t get the last word. Captivity won’t get the last word. Separation won’t get the last word. Injustice won’t get the last word. The last word is life – life for all of God’s people. We’re in this together, lonely no more. Thanks be to God!
